Organizing: Finding a Focus
Organizing: Finding a Focus
Thesis and plan of development:
For intro:
"After oil, coffee is the second most valuable commodity in the world. More than 50 percent of Americans drink coffee everyday — three to fourcups each, more than 330 million cups a day and counting."(http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-3445_162-529388.html)
America drinks 4 million cups of Starbuck's coffee a day from almost 8000 locations state-wide. California claims the most with 2008 location, followed by Texas and Washington at 588 and 537.(http://greenanswers.com/q/181395/products-shopping/food-beverage/how-many-cups-starbucks-coffee-are-sold-america-every-day#ixzz27yO3ukAU)
A chain once known for its arsenal of baked goods and Fred the Baker's famous "Time to Make the Donuts" television spots, Dunkin' Donuts now sells 2.7 million cups of coffee every day -- that's nearly one billion cups a year. (http://www.fastcompany.com/75485/dunkin-donuts-reinventing-americas-cup-coffee)
"The second largest coffeehouse chain in the US trails number one Starbucks by 7,700 locations. That is scary. The entire list of the top ten shows just how HUGE-mungous Starbucks is: Starbucks - 8,000" (http://www.slashfood.com/2006/06/11/the-10-largest-coffee-chains-in-the-us/)
"The coffee and doughnut chain currently operates nearly 7,000 stores nationwide. Each new store adds an average of 20 to 25 new employees, both full and part-time a Dunkin spokeswoman said." (http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/04/news/companies/dunkin_donuts_locations/index.htm)
Professor Kerr's Intro Idea:
Rome Neal, of CBS news, reported that, 50% of Americans start their day with coffee and drink between three and four cups a day. Neal points out that there is more than 330 million sold each day. Over 4 million come from Starbucks, Americas largest coffee chain with over 8,000 locations. Another 2.7 million cups of coffee are sold in Dunkin Donuts with a chain of 7,000 locations. But there is more to these two coffee giants than there decaf lattes. Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks differ in their product line variety, price, and atmosphere. My Idea of Intro:
CBS news reporter, Rome Neal stated that, 50% of all Americans begin their day with coffee. Most Americans drink among three to four cups a day. Rome Neal points out that about 330 million cups of coffee are sold daily (http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-3445_162-529388.html). Over 4 million cups of coffee are sold from Starbucks Coffee Company. Starbucks is America’s largest coffee chain with over 8,000 locations (http://greenanswers.com/q/181395/products-shopping/food-beverage/how-many-cups-starbucks-coffee-are-sold-america-every-day). About 2.7 million cups of coffee are sold at Dunkin Donuts (http://www.fastcompany.com/75485/dunkin-donuts-reinventing-americas-cup-coffee). Dunkin Donuts has about 7,000 locations in America (http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/04/news/companies/dunkin_donuts_locations/index.htm). But, there is more to these coffee corporations than their specialty coffee beverages.
