Essay 2: Pre-writing

What did my research tell me?

Which one ultimately is more popular? Which one is more populated in cities (has more stores)?

Dunkin’ Donuts:

The company is set to use the funds to pay down debt and expand the Dunkin' Donuts brand across the Midwest and to the West Coast. Dunkin', which ranked #1 ahead Starbucks in terms of customer loyalty over the last five years, plans to double U.S. storefronts over the next two decades.Right now the chain operates only 100 of its 6,800 stores outside the Northeast. That means a new store and fresh cup of joe could be coming very soon to a location near you! Starbucks Coffee:

But while Americans might be more likely to buy their coffee at Starbucks, they like Dunkin' Donuts better, according to 2011 analysis from Rasmussen Reports. Their phone survey found that 57 percent of coffee-drinking Americans express an at least somewhat favorable opinion of Dunkin' Donuts, including 20 percent with a very favorable view of the chain. In contrast, 49 percent of American coffee drinkers regard Starbucks at least somewhat favorably, with 14 percent who have a very favorable opinion. Thirty-four percent of coffee drinkers hold an unfavorable opinion of Starbucks, versus 22 percent who feel unfavorably about Dunkin' Donuts.

Starbucks invites customers to hang out with its cozy café atmosphere and tables where they can work or socialize. Given that Starbucks now offers free wifi, their locations attract customers who may stay for hours, perhaps racking up more of a bill over time. Dunkin' Donuts, on the other hand, is more of a fast-food experience, aimed at customers on the go. Besides, Dunkin' Donuts' fluorescent lighting hardly asks you to linger.

Starbucks:

  • online store
  • over 12,500 store throughout the USA
  • Over 17,000 stores worldwide

Dunkin Donuts:

What is the difference between both of the companies?

Dunkin and Sbux:

Atmosphere One of the downsides to Dunkin Donuts is that it doesn’t feel like a coffee shop, but rather a gas station or convenient store. They lights are bright and there is a very stale feel to the store. Seating is much like a fast food restaurant with benches and tables, as compared to Starbucks who has nice couches you can sit on. Starbucks also has a more homely feel with dimmer lighting and soothing music playing in the background to make you feel good. I have heard, and seen, Dunkin Donuts do some renovations to its stores to make them a little more inviting, but nothing beats the atmosphere at Starbucks.

Coffee When I compare the coffee between the two companies’s I am talking about the plain black stuff, not the hyped up mochas or lattes. Starbucks has a wide variety of coffee that spans come from all over the globe and has many different strengths and tastes. As compared to Dunkin Donuts which has one brand of coffee that they market as simply Dunkin Donuts coffee. It would be tough to compare all the coffee’s Starbucks has with the one coffee Dunkin Donut’s has so I will use the house blend from Starbucks for this segment. For just sheer taste I think Dunkin Donuts has a better coffee. Starbucks seems to almost burn their coffee which leaves a very strong taste to it, and maybe too much for some people to handle. However, for those college students out there, Starbucks is the way to go for that caffeine kick.

Pricing This is where most people would expect Dunkin Donuts to win, with all you hear about Starbucks over priced coffee. That isn’t necessarily true considering we are talking about plain black coffee here. Starbucks is actually pretty competitive if you order a regular coffee, and you can usually buy a cup for just under $2. I believe Dunkin Donuts maybe a little cheaper, but it isn’t a reason to choose one place over the other. This is a toss up and goes to which ever type of coffee you prefer.

Which company has more of a wide variety of products?

Starbucks does have a wide selection of coffee and other beverages, I will admit that. However, it kind of stops there. Although, Starbucks has sandwiches, paninis, and sweets, they do not have quite a selection as Dunkin Donuts. First off, when you first walk into Starbucks, all you see is a little case with a few sweets on top of a cooler with prepackaged deli sandwiches. Now, when you walk into Dunkin, the first thing you notice is the tremendous donut, bagel, and muffin cases! When I take my child with me to Starbucks, she has never looked at there selection and asked for any of their sweet treats. Whenever I just mention the word Dunkin she goes nuts! When we walk in, the employee behind the counter always asks her what she would like and gives her a moist chocolate munchkin (which she devours). They have over 50 types of donuts (depending on which Dunkin you go to) to choose from! They have breakfast sandwiches, tuna or chicken salad sandwiches (tuna being my personal favorite!), plus tons of different flavored bagels that can be mixed and matched with several types of cream cheeses. There is something for the business man, working mom on the run, kids, or even teenagers! (http://nora411.hubpages.com/hub/Dunkin-Donuts-vs-Starbucks)

Names can be deceiving. Dunkin’ Donuts is more famous for its coffee than baked goods. DD offers about a dozen varieties of coffee beverages, but the company is best known for the regular stuff – its original blend. Dunkin’ Donuts didn’t introduce lattes, cappuccinos and espressos until 2003. As for baked goods, DD sells 52 types of donuts, as well as bagels, muffins and breakfast sandwiches.

Starbucks, on the other hand, specializes in barista-type drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos and espressos. The company offers more than 30 blends of coffee, as well as well as Tazo teas and other non-coffee beverages. Food options include pastries, fruit cups, salads, yogurt parfaits and oatmeal. Online store products: all three stores have great online stores that sell all their trademark coffees and teas; however, Starbucks offers a greater variety of products than the other two stores do

Starbucks:

  • Teas
  • Coffee and Tea equipment and accessories
  • Drinkware
  • Syrups and sauces
  • Hot cocoa and treats
  • Music and books
  • Apparel
  • Office coffee equipment

Dunkin Donuts:

  • Coffees
  • Teas
  • Drinkware
  • Coffee and Tea equipment and accessories
  • Apparel

Which company produces good quality products?

Fair trade and organic products: Both Starbucks and Caribou Coffee offer fair trade and organic products, Dunkin Donuts does not. (http://coffee.knoji.com/starbucks-reviews/)

Both companies sell coffee made from premium Arabica coffee beans that is freshly ground, brewed and served. Both send experts to coffee farms around the world to select high-quality coffee beans.

Dunkin Donut’s throws out any pot of coffee that is not used within 18 minutes and brews a new one. Starbucks requires baristas to brew a fresh pot of coffee every 30 minutes. (http://kompareit.com/blog/2012/06/21/comparing-coffee-brands-dunkin-donuts-vs-starbucks/)

Which one is more cost efficient to go to?

Dunkin’ Donuts:

If you're not familiar with the Dunkin' way, you can expect good coffee at a good price and even a few food options that go beyond the obvious choice of donuts. From a consumer perspective, part of Dunkin's success is the fact that it has really stuck to its roots, says Dan Gross, Yahoo! Finance economics editor. It has grown its menu selection without adding complicated, confusing and trendy options like Starbucks' $4 latte. Prices- Okay, lets get serious for a minute. Money matters! Depending on what you're ordering, you will almost always spend more at Starbucks. For a "tall" cup of regular coffee from Starbucks, you're looking at somewhere around $1.75 (depending on which location you're buying from). From Dunkin a "small" cup of regular coffee is going to be around $1.39... and it's delicious! Depending on the flavor and size of the Starbucks coffee you can be paying anwhere up to $3.50. The X-LG from Dunkin Donuts is priced at $2.19. And this is for any flavor!! Even when buying a pound of coffee to take home with you, from Dunkin it's about $9.99 (again for any flavor!). Depending on the flavor at Starbucks, you can be paying up to $14! (http://nora411.hubpages.com/hub/Dunkin-Donuts-vs-Starbucks)
